Well, here’s an interesting Postscript to Friday’s devotional, “Trust the Process.” (Well, interesting side note to me at least!) After writing this morning’s EveryDay Life and referencing “layaway accounts,” realizing that younger readers may not have even heard of such a practical system of financial integrity; imagine my surprise when I read a news report today from the Associated Press reporting that, “Walmart stores are bringing back something customers have been asking for since the Great Recession: layaway . . We’re always looking for ways to ease budget strain for our customers . . layaway – which allows shoppers to pay over time, interest-free, and pick up their merchandise when it’s paid in full – became popular during the Great Depression. The practice had become largely a thing of the past as the economy flourished. But during the recession that began in late 2007, other merchants added back or expanded the service.”
Another reminder that there are some processes that made sense in the past for very good reasons, and continue to make sense still today. The practice of saving first and buying later seems superior to the lifestyle of buying now and paying later. Deferred satisfaction is not a bad thing; rather, it is a good thing in more times and instances than not. I know of times when what I wanted didn’t happen when I hoped nor as I wished, but was all the sweeter and more meaningful when, in God’s timing, they did. The process was worth the wait . .
Please do not forward this to your credit card company! (Just kidding.)
