“God is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27 NKJV.
Strength does not rest within until it has come from above.
My thoughts and comments today are about “security.”
Increasingly, insecurity seems the norm rather than the exception. Maybe that has always been true, but fear and uncertainty seems heightened. Global unrest, political upheavals, international terrorism, and financial challenges at home and abroad are not reassuring. Political differences seem irreconcilable; global crises multiply; unemployment resists solution; investments bring less reliable returns. Sometimes, you wonder who really knows what’s going on right now, let alone what the future is. Where do you turn for any measure of certainty? Feeling insecure about current or future events is not unique to this generation. Every generation has faced their own challenges.
I love Moses’ final words to Israel. After speaking prophetic blessings upon each tribe, Moses concludes with this assuring word, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms . . Blessed are you. Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord?” Deuteronomy 33:27/29 NIV. Does your heart quicken with the astounding security of that? Your God is eternal and unchanging, without beginning or end. See Malachi 3:6 NKJV. Therefore, your refuge is as eternal and unchanging as, “The eternal God [who] is your refuge.” Your God surrounds you in safety. See Psalm 4:8 NIV. Therefore, you rest in a place of strength because, “. . underneath are the everlasting arms of God.” See Jeremiah 32:17 NIV. God is the singular source and sure foundation for a secure life.
When family fails, when friends disappoint, when the stock market falls, and when governments can neither protect nor provide, your God remains the same. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and fortress; my God in Him will I trust.’” Psalm 91:1-2 NKJV. His Word instructs me; His presence goes with me; His love abides in me; His grace surrounds me; His providence o’er shadows me; His arms uphold me – I am secure.
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 20:28-31 NIV.
As you read the words of Isaiah above did you notice the transition of supernatural strength from God, who does not tire or become weary, to those of us whose humanity is susceptible to both? Strength does not rest within until it has come from above. “Ascribe strength to God . . The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people.” Psalm 68:34-35 NKJV.
My prayer for you this day is that you will find security in God and His Word.
